Artist Introduction

Mr. OuBen

Ou Ben (b. 1943, Guangdong, China) began studying calligraphy and painting with his father at the age of five. In 1961 he joined a Guangzhou cultural institute as a full-time artist, and in 1984 moved to Fiji before settling in Auckland, New Zealand in 2003. Since 2012 he has held 66 solo exhibitions and founded five public “Ou Ben Art Galleries” in Guangdong—Guangzhou, Zhaoqing, Foshan, Qingyuan and Jiangmen. His monumental landscapes artworks are permanently displayed and collected by major museums in Beijing, Tianjin and Guangzhou. In Auckland he has staged five further individual exhibitions and presents Chinese paintings each year to New Zealand’s Prime Minister, ministers and MPs. The New Zealand Consul-General in Guangzhou has attended and addressed the opening ceremonies of his exhibitions in Guangzhou, Foshan and Haizhu District, underscoring the role of art in building the China–New Zealand friendship.
